Better quality for passengers

„With the redesign of the terminal, Bavaria’s gateway to the world is taking account of passengers‘ demands in terms of comfort and quality of stay. This means that this passenger building, which was opened in 1992 and was planned according to completely different specifications at the time, will be tailored to the specific requirements of tomorrow’s air traffic,“ explained Bavarian Finance Minister and FMG Supervisory Board Chairman Albert Füracker. On June 28, 2018, the Supervisory Board of Flughafen München GmbH gave the go-ahead for the expansion project.

The aim of the expansion measure is to adapt the non-Schengen area to meet demand and to increase the quality of service and the quality of stay in Terminal 1. Level 03 houses baggage claim and departure gates for aircraft that are not directly adjacent to the building. Level 04 connects to the existing terminal at the level of Module B and includes the central security and passport control in the core building, the „marketplace“ with high-end retail stores and gastronomy, and the departure gates in the pier area.

Level 05 is used for the „distribution“ of arriving passengers, depending on whether they want to go to baggage claim or to the security checkpoint for transfer passengers, which is also located on this level. This level will also feature attractive and spacious lounge areas.

The total area of the expansion, including the affected areas in the current Arrival Module B, is approximately 90,000 square meters. The general planner is the bidding consortium „SSF Ingenieure AG / Schüßler-Plan Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH / JSK Architkci Sp. z o o, Warschau / sop Architekten GmbH“.

Expansion from own funds

With the expansion of Terminal 1, Munich Airport is offering the airlines already operating there a long-term development perspective and at the same time creating space for new airlines wishing to fly to and from Munich in the future.

In 2018, construction work began on the apron.
